Mary Potter Hospice apartments update

Mary Potter Hospice is pleased that it is a step closer to building an apartment complex on Mein Street to help with long term funding of its Hospice operations. Today Wellington City Council has notified the resource consent application to a group of neighbours on Owen and Mein Streets, Newtown.

“It is an important project for the Hospice as it provides another income stream to keep the Hospice services free to Wellingtonians,” says Hospice Board member and chair of the Apartments subcommittee Malcolm Bruce.

“We have substantially altered the design of the apartments over the last 10 months, including lowering the height, changing the design to follow the contours of the hillside, and most recently, amended the cladding to stained and treated cedar.” (see image below)

“We are considering the Council’s decision and how we will respond to it. All parties now have 20 working days to make a submission to the Council.”

  • The 39-unit apartment complex will be run as a social enterprise, and the rental income will be put back into the Hospice to fund services long term.
  • The design is substantially different to that first proposed by the Hospice. A key difference to the revised design released in September 2016 is that the cladding will now be stained and treated cedar. (see image below)
  • Mary Potter Hospice must gear up for a big increase in demand for its services over the next 20 years. Projections show that there will be an increase in demand over the next decade, which then rises more sharply by about 30 percent the following decade. Patient numbers in 2015/16 were 12 percent higher than the previous year.
  • The building of the apartments is possible because of a very large donation, tagged to building an income-earning apartment complex to provide an ongoing income stream.
  • The income from the apartments will supplement the $5 million already raised through charity shops, bequests, grants, events and other fundraising. It cost around $12 million to run the hospice, and the government pays around $5.5 million a year.
