Masterclass: Pain and Symptom Management in Palliative Care

This Masterclass is led by our Physicians in collaboration with Mary Potter staff and our partners across the health sector.   We will use a case based learning model to look at the management of common symptoms in palliative care.   The sessions will include assessment and management of pain, dyspnoea, nausea and vomiting, and delirium.   An end of life pathway, Te Ara Whakapiri, will be discussed as a tool for guiding care in the last days of life.

The day has been designed for health professionals working with palliative patients and family/whānau/aiga.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • 1. An understanding of the range and role of different opioids currently used. 
  • 2. Knowledge of when to introduce adjuvant analgesia.
  • 3. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to dyspnoea.
  • 4. A framework for understanding and ameliorating delirium towards the end of life.
  • A framework for understanding and treating nausea in a palliative setting.
