1979 “When I turned up for my first day I was apprehensive, and wondered if I’d be good enough. But it didn’t take long to feel comfortable. I had no uniform, and asked what I should buy. The Sister said it should be cheery and bright so I bought myself a light blue, a burgundy and a fire-engine red uniform!”

2019 “Now we visit our patients until 10pm. We can settle patients leaving the Inpatient Unit or hospital into home and make sure they have everything they need – and support the family too. I pack a bag of food to take with me and at the beginning I had to set a timer to remind myself to eat! Sometimes I spend long hours with a patient who needs me.”
Forty years later, Nurse Louise Katene works in the Inpatient Unit and visits Hospice patients in their homes.
We’re calling out for your support
Mary Potter Hospice is a local charity and relies on your support. Each year we need to raise around $7 million to keep our services free. Whether you’re donating in memory of a loved one, in appreciation of hospice care, or simply because you believe in the work we do – thank you. It’s people like you that make our work possible.
