Apartments get go ahead

September 12th, 2017

Mary Potter Hospice is very pleased that it has been given the go-ahead to build an apartment complex in Mein Street, with the proceeds from the rental income to support hospice services into the future.

Mary Potter Hospice Board member, and the driving force behind the establishment of the Hospice, Sister Margaret Lancaster QSM, said she is delighted that the apartments have the go ahead.

“For decades Mary Potter Hospice has been serving the people of Wellington. We have always provided a free service, and we have been supported most generously by the Wellington community,” said Sister Margaret.

“But we are seeing a big increase in the number of patients as the population ages and we need to increase and broaden our income streams to help secure our future.”

The construction of the apartments has been made possible by a substantial donation from long time Hospice volunteer Mike O’Sullivan.

“Mike’s generosity means that we can construct the apartments, and the rental income will help extend our care in the community. He has been a loyal volunteer with the hospice for nine years and we are very grateful to him,” said Sister Margaret.

Mike O’Sullivan said he was pleased to be able to provide seed funding of several million dollars for the apartments because he could see the huge contribution that the Hospice makes, with a third of the people of Wellington who die receiving a service from Mary Potter Hospice.

“As a Wellingtonian I understand the contribution that the Hospice makes to the region.  I have been able to help as a volunteer for many years, and contributing to the building of the apartment complex is another way of giving back to the Wellington community.”

“This is something that I can contribute to Wellington, and I’m very pleased to be able to do this.”

Mike is a property investor, and sold Flagstaff Hill to the Council as a Reserve for a fraction of its value.
