Ever wondered what happens to those beautiful messages written on the Farmers Tree of Remembrance cards?
By Christmas eve the Trees of Remembrance in Farmers stores across Wellington are loaded with thousands of cards. On the back of the cards are handwritten messages – some of appreciation to Mary Potter Hospice, some of Christmas cheers, but most of them remember those loved ones who aren’t here this Christmas to be with family and friends.
These cards are collected by Mary Potter Hospice staff. Spiritual carer Sharon blesses the cards. They are then burnt and buried to be returned to the earth.
“Each of these cards had real meaning for the person who wrote them,” said Sharon. “We want to treat them with respect and to honour both the writer and the person who is remembered.”
