For over 40 years, Mary Potter Hospice has provided specialist free-of-charge palliative care services for the people of Wellington, Porirua and Kāpiti. They have a proud history of care and compassion and support people with life-limiting illnesses and their families or whānau in the way they want, where they want.

Mary Potter Hospice has a 12-bed Inpatient Unit in Newtown, and the majority of their patients are cared for in their own homes by their highly competent and dedicated community palliative care teams based in Wellington, Kāpiti and Porirua. These teams currently provide services to about 300 people at any one time.

Mary Potter Hospice is seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist with an allied health registration to join their In-Patient Unit based in Newtown.

Reporting to the In-Patient Unit Nurse Manager, you will play a pivotal role in helping patients maintain their independence, wellbeing and quality of life through the therapeutic use of everyday activities to treat the physical, mental, developmental, and emotional ailments that impact a patient’s ability to perform day-to-day tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating a patient’s health condition and needs
  • Developing a therapeutic plan for patients, identifying specific goals and the types of activities
  • Evaluating a patient’s home on the basis of the patient’s conditions and needs, and identify potential improvements for access and equipment (i.e. hospital bed)
  • Visiting patients at home to support them in the activities which make up their lives
  • Working with patients and their families about how to accommodate and care for the patient and enhance skills to manage and adapt to the patients changing functions (i.e. managing breathlessness)
  • Support patients with their legacy work and to achieve their bucket list
  • Enabling patients’ participation and engagement in everyday activities and helping them to develop, improve and maintain the skills needed across their lifespan, including living with dying

This role is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team providing specialist palliative care to patients. Mary Potter Hospice are offering a competitive salary, paid supervision and a range of wellness benefits.

Person Profile:

  • Proven experience as an Occupational Therapist, or similar role
  • A recognised postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in a related field
  • Experience in a palliative care setting is highly desirable, but not essential
  • Must be a registered Occupational Therapist with a current practicing certificate
  • Experience working in health, social services or hospital DHB environment
  • Hold a current NZ Driver’s Licence
