Since 2016, the Kāpiti Lions Club has been keeping things neat and tidy at the Mary Potter Hospice base in Paraparaumu.
Organised by Gary Bly, the club’s Project Services Director, the Lions team undertake regular maintenance of the grounds. Two members are rostered each fortnight to clear the leaves and do general maintenance of the outside furniture.
They also tidy the driveway including removing weeds to reduce the risk of the storm water drainage grates becoming blocked.
Every few months they prune trees and tackle other larger tasks, such as repainting the fence and furniture.
According to Mary Potter Hospice Administrator at the Kāpiti base, Debra, the Lions are always willing to go the extra mile.
“They are happy to carry out any gardening maintenance requests put to them. They also ensure that our sun shades are in place in the courtyard for the hot summer months and remove them for winter, and keep our water feature clean and functional.
“Their happy can do attitude is greatly appreciated and valued by us all at the Kāpiti base,” said Debra.
In addition to the work at the base, club members for many years have participated in Mary Potter Hospice fundraising appeals and the annual Strawberry Festival.
The Kāpiti Lions Club was incorporated in 1963 and on 4 July will celebrate its 60 years of service to the community.
