For Michael’s family, the greatest gift their dad gave was being able to die at home – surrounded by love, in the place he knew best.
Michael’s family have shared their gratitude to Mary Potter Hospice for supporting Michael and his family to do things his way.
“We, his children and wider family and friends, are extremely grateful and appreciative for everything the Hospice Team did for dad, and for us, in the months leading up to his death and for enabling us to care for him at home, in his final days.”
Michael’s family said he died, as he lived, on his own terms. He was an All White in the 1960s, a national league player and a passionate supporter of Seatoun Football Club all his life.
“He was a creature of habit. On a Friday night he could be found down the local pub and at Seatoun Football Club on a Saturday – unless Christmas Day fell on a Saturday!
“He was determined, stoic and uncomplaining. Dad absolutely treasured life, and the people in it. As hard as it was for us to say goodbye, we know he was ready,” said his family.
“Mum also received care from Mary Potter Hospice, when she died from breast cancer at 54. Mum and dad had many years together as they had known one another from school days.”
“We will each treasure special, fun and touching moments we had with him. He let us care for him, even whilst telling us ‘I’m fine, I’m fine’.
“Thank you again for everything you did for him and us. We know dad enjoyed your home visits and the connections he made with people at, and through, Mary Potter Hospice.”
For Michael’s family, Hospice support meant more than medical care. It was the gift of being able to care for him at home, in his own bed, with his children around him along with the guidance, comfort, and reassurance that they weren’t alone.
Michael’s story is just one of many. Every day, Mary Potter Hospice helps families find comfort, dignity and connection at end of life. This kind of care is made possible thanks to the generosity of our community thank you for helping families like Michael’s to be together, at home, when it matters most.
