Behind-the-scenes impact

January 29th, 2026

When things feel calm, safe, and taken care of at the hospice, it’s often because your support has already done its work.

At Mary Potter Hospice, care doesn’t only happen at the bedside. It also happens through the people who make sure our spaces are safe, functional, and ready to support patients and their whānau when it matters most.

One of those people is Joachim.

Meet Joachim

Joachim is our Maintenance Manager. Thanks to the support of people like you, he looks after the safety and upkeep of several hospice buildings, including sites that come with daily challenges.

When something needs fixing, when a safety issue pops up, or when a space needs attention, Joachim is there. He works carefully and respectfully, always mindful of the patients and whānau around him. Often, issues are sorted before they ever become noticeable, which means care can continue without disruption.

If everything feels seamless, it’s usually because someone like Joachim has already taken care of it.

A wish you helped make happen

Through our Christmas Wishlist, a supporter chose to help in a very practical way by funding the tools Joachim needs to do his work safely and efficiently.

For Joachim, this support filled a very real gap. In his own words:

“Thank you very much for gifting Mary Potter Hospice the two Makita tools from my Christmas Wishlist: a circular saw and an electric grinder, with a battery set.

These expensive tools are essential for professional maintenance work. It’s been hard to be without these tools, and it is amazing to have this gap filled.

The maintenance team is very small (two people!), and these tools will enable us to complete maintenance work much more safely and efficiently.”

Because of this support, Joachim and the maintenance team can respond more quickly, minimise disruption, and help keep hospice spaces safe, comfortable, and dignified. It’s the kind of impact that happens behind the scenes, but it’s felt every day by patients, whānau, staff, and volunteers.

Recognising the care you help sustain

Joachim’s dedication to safety and care was recently recognised with Mary Potter Hospice’s Health & Safety / Infection Prevention and Control Award.

The award acknowledges the professionalism, care, and attention Joachim brings to his role every day. Support from people like you helps ensure he can continue this important work safely and effectively, maintaining environments that protect patients, whānau, staff, and volunteers.

What your support really does

Your impact doesn’t always look the way you might expect.

Sometimes it looks like the right tools in the right hands.
Sometimes it looks like work done quietly, so care can happen smoothly.
And sometimes it looks like choosing to support a real, practical need and trusting that it will make a difference.

Every gift you make helps Mary Potter Hospice continue its mission. Whether it’s visible or behind the scenes, your support helps create the spaces where compassionate care can happen.

Thank you for being part of it.

Every gift makes a difference, whether it supports care you see or the behind-the-scenes work that makes it possible.
