Kāpiti community rallies behind hospice base upgrade

April 14th, 2026

Hospice care across Kāpiti continues for local families, with work set to begin on an upgrade to the Mary Potter Kāpiti Community Base.

The base supports around 200 people each year across the district. Now, 30 years after it first opened, the space is being refurbished to better serve patients, whānau, staff and volunteers.

While most hospice care happens in people’s homes, the base plays a vital role for outpatient clinics, Day Unit services and appointments, supporting staff, coordinating care, and providing space for families and visiting clinicians.

Hospice services will continue across the Kāpiti district throughout the upgrade. Patients and whānau should use their usual contact number to speak to staff.

“Our team continues to support people every day,” says Director of Fundraising, Communications and Marketing Sandy McGregor. “This upgrade strengthens how we deliver that care into the future.”

Work begins in mid-May and is expected to take three to four months. During this time, staff will operate from temporary accommodation in Kāpiti.

The renovation will modernise the building, upgrading services delivery spaces, improving workspaces for staff, and improving heating and lighting.

Grants, major donors, and strong community support have made the $400,000 project possible.

Trusts and businesses including, Kāpiti BNI Chapters, Lions Club of Kāpiti, Waikanae Golf Club, Kāpiti MenzShed, Thomas George Macarthy Trust, Kitchen Elements, Pub Charity, Kāpiti Disibility Fund through the Nikau Foundation and the Deane Endowment Fund are among those contributing.

This upgrade reflects a community stepping up to support hospice care, now and into the future. Ongoing support remains essential to keep hospice care free of charge for patients and whānau across the district.

The upgraded Kāpiti hospice base is expected to reopen around mid-August, strengthening care for local people and whānau across the district.
