Kāpiti community raises over $45,000 for Hospice

May 6th, 2024

Mal Bird has done it again! With taking on organising the National Spearfishing Championship for the first time, he was gutted when this year’s fish auction usually following the competition – held in support of Mary Potter Hospice and Paraparaumu Fire Service – had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Instead, he brought the Kāpiti Community together last Thursday to auction off 50+ items, generously donated by local businesses.

Over 220 guests flocked to the Southwards Car Museum for drinks, nibbles, and to get entertained by Harcourts Auctioneers Doug Palmer and Eddie Winkel who led through the live auctions, getting the room excited about supporting their local Hospice and the chance of going home with new hardware tools, fishing rods, dining experiences and weekend getaways.

The Kāpiti Community raised over $45,000 for Mary Potter Hospice from this event, and we’re beyond grateful for the amazing support we received from the attending guests, bidders, local businesses who sponsored the auction items, the event supporters Southward Car Museum, Harcourts, Starfish Kapiti, Spy Valley Wines, From our Kitchen, Wham Bam, Kapiti Rotary Club, Captured by Friday Photography, Beach FM, BNI, and last but not least Mal Bird for his amazing ongoing support!

Mal’s efforts goes beyond supporting Mary Potter Hospice, through his hard work over the last eight months he has raised over $100,000 for the community. ($75,000 for Mary Potter Hospice, $10,000 for the Paraparaumu Fire brigade, and $12,000 for Spearfishing NZ) and on top of this he has donated 20kg of fresh fish to the Kapiti Food bank.
