Mary Potter Hospice Kāpiti base refurbishment

Thirty years ago, the Kāpiti community came together to help establish a local base for Mary Potter Hospice care.

Today, that same spirit of community support is helping transform the base into a warmer, more practical and fit-for-purpose space for patients, whānau and our Kāpiti team.

The refurbishment is now more than halfway complete, with building work on track to finish in September.

A more welcoming space for our Kāpiti community

If you’ve been part of Mary Potter Hospice in Kāpiti over the years, whether as a patient or whānau member, supporter, volunteer or member of our wider community, this refurbishment is part of a story you have helped shape.

The new kitchen is now installed and has been opened up to create a warmer and more practical space. A stone benchtop will be fitted soon, while new flooring, fittings and furnishings will help make the base comfortable and welcoming.

There’s important work happening behind the scenes too. Soundproofing will provide greater privacy for patients and whānau, while building and fire systems are being brought up to current standards.

A problematic skylight is also being replaced to prevent ongoing damage.

At the heart of these decisions is the experience of the people who will use the space.

A base for care closer to home

The refurbished building will be an important hub for our Kāpiti community team.

It will provide a place to meet with patients and whānau, coordinate specialist palliative care and support, and work from as our team provides care throughout the Kāpiti community.

Our team has been closely involved in planning the refurbishment, including the small practical details that can make a difference every day.

And while all this work has been happening, care has continued. Our team has been working from our temporary Kāpiti Hub while the refurbishment is underway.

Celebrating 30 years in Kāpiti

There’s something particularly meaningful about seeing the base renewed as we mark 30 years of Mary Potter Hospice care in Kāpiti.

Three decades ago, local people helped establish our presence here. Today, community generosity is helping ensure Mary Potter Hospice has a strong, welcoming and fit-for-purpose base in Kāpiti for the years ahead.

We’re enormously grateful to everyone who has contributed to making the refurbishment possible.

Once the building work is complete and the timing of our return is confirmed, we look forward to welcoming our community back and sharing the finished space with you.
